Detroit or where I fell in love with seagulls

While visiting my son, we took a day trip to Detroit. It was a very hot Sunday and downtown Detroit was deserted…perfect for pictures. I wish I could have been there very early in the morning. The light would have been less harsh. However, I did get to take many pictures of seagulls. They are great models, for the most part, standing still when I was fumbling with camera settings.

Toledo

I took these pictures while visiting my son and his fiance in Toledo. The water front area is very nice. I think I would like to explore the area in more detail the next time I visit. As usual, buildings are the elements that caught my eye.

I need a good wide-angle lens to capture scenes as my eye sees them. Lacking that, I’m making do with the standard Canon EF 55-250 lens, trying to shoot the details.

Summer is finally here, school is out, and I can begin taking pictures again. I visited Asheville, NC for a week and fell in love with the gargoyles at the Biltmore, plus other architectural features of the estate. I took many pictures while there and I’m going to post a few of them here.

My husband and I took the Architect’s tour while we were at the Biltmore. Great tour for seeing more of the house, plus there are some great photo ops. Unfortunately, guests are not allowed to take pictures inside the house…well, I guess some people are allowed to, just not your basic tourist like myself. The exterior of the house and the grounds are beautiful, though, and I had lots of material to work with when I came home.

New Years Day 2012

On a day when many people are trying to get over the effects of bringing in the new year, my husband I took a drive down to Alley Springs, new Eminence, MO. The day was beautiful, sunny and not too cold. I was trying out a lens I bought from a student and wanted new material to try out in Color Efex Pro 4, a nice little Christmas present.

I like the way they turned out. I’m still adjusting my look with these pictures. I think I’m a little too enamored with the detail extractor and other fun filters on CE4, but it’s fun playing around with them.

One Fine Day

Finally managed to get outside for a bit and take some pictures. I don’t know about where you are, but Fall here, has been outstanding. Warmish days with cool nights, perfect weather. These pictures were taken around Eminence, Missouri, a beautiful, if isolated, place. There are lots of photo opportunities there ( springs, falls, and rolling hills) if you are in the area.

I saw in the Rocky Mountain School of Photography (RMSP) newsletter, that they are now open for registration for their 2012 courses. I attended a Photo Weekend last year and it was very informative, plus I thought the cost was about right, $189 for the two days of classes.

I’m having a hard time getting out to take pictures: too much going on at work (where I earn the money to pay for photography) and my online classes (so I can make more money and eventually have more time for photography). So, this is my version of reruns, pictures I have taken during past falls.

Sundays seem to be the day that I try to catch up on homework for my online class, but today was so beautiful that I couldn’t help stopping for a quick fun break, taking pictures of some flowers in my back yard. Here are the pics; I think they turned out kind of cool.

Well, probably not a picture a day, but I am planning on posting a picture a week. Today’s pictures are several variations on a sunflower. I like all three versions, although it irritates me that the Picnik version seems to be the most popular with friends and family. One little click, no artistic flair or carefully added effects on my part, and bam! Instant art. It seems much too easy to be considered good. I like the idea that I have slaved over the editing process for hours, days even, before coming up with a great image. Or, I can jump on Picnik, and click, click, there it is.

Hello World

Today is the first time I’m adding content to my site, wo-hoo! The purpose of this site is to showcase my photography and to say a few words about it along the way. My plan is to put up photos, write a little background about them, and with any luck, generate some interest in my work. I am open to useful critique and hope that other photographers will want to discuss/share ideas as well.
